They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
When an evacuation order reaches a coastal city, skeptics, claiming that storms never hit there, refuse to leave. Then it hits and they desperately need rescue. Their former pride is gone and they are skeptics no more. They attain instant clarity, humility, and repentance. They cannot believe they once thought that. Just such an awakening awaits those Peter referred to in his second letter. They don’t see God or any evidence that he will appear. They deliberately overlook the possibility that God exists.
Many have made this mistake over the past three centuries. Their reason gives them no reason to believe the Bible. Thomas Jefferson deliberately removed all supernatural content from his version of the New Testament. The German critics of the 19th century deliberately dated the New Testament books 200 years after they were written. Today, scholars deliberately overlook the manuscript evidence that clearly shows that the New Testament is a trustworthy document. No topic is derided more than the flood. They ridicule those who cling to biblical inerrancy in the face of science and reason. Psalm 14 sums it up well.
The fool says in his heart, there is no God.
He also says the storm will never hit here. When the storm hits, the fool refuses to leave. When Jesus calls…
The fool refuses to believe.
