He is like a tree

      planted by streams of water

that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers.

4       The wicked are not so,

but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Troubleshooting guides can be humorous in their advice such as, “Make sure the plug is in the socket.” If the appliance is not plugged in, your Keurig will yield you nothing. The same is true for the people of God. Psalm 1 tells of the blessed man who meditates on God’s law day and night. He is plugged in to the Lord. We can see the contrast in the degree of success of the blessed man and the wicked one. The blessed yields fruit and its leaf is green, fed by the word of the Lord. The wicked man is like a dried leaf in the street on a windy day, tossed to and fro into oblivion. What an apt metaphor for the people of the New Covenant, just as much as the old!

Jesus said in John 15, “I am the vine, you are the branches…remain in me and you will bear abundant fruit.” If you have ever seen a dead branch lying on the ground and it has fruit on it, eat it quickly because it will not last long without life-giving nutrients. It is the same for a Christian that falls away from the vine through sin and neglect of prayer and the reading of the Bible. Such a person cannot bear fruit until they cry out to the Lord to be reconnected. The church is how you can be reconnected. Churches are planted like trees all over the world. Find one today and make sure…

You are plugged in.
