Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

I have often wondered if the prophets had any inkling what God inspired them to write for the people or if they were merely conduits for God’s word with no idea what it meant. In researching yesterday’s sermon, I encountered this truth from Peter. It tells us that the prophets received the word and sought to understand it. Daniel is one example of a prophet who wanted to know whereof God spoke. Peter tells us that more than one was curious to know who the Messiah was. Isaiah wrote that he would be born of a virgin and would be Almighty God. Could he know what that looked like? It would make an interesting study but there is something we can learn from this.

Many people refuse to believe in Jesus because they do not understand every aspect of his being. They say that if they cannot understand how he could be fully God and fully man, they cannot believe in him. They also say that , because they cannot fully understand the Trinity, they cannot believe in Jesus as God the Son. They make a fundamental error that the prophets avoided. They sought to understand yet did not; and still believed what God told them and what the Scriptures said. When Jesus returns, all these questions will be answered and will not matter once we see Jesus as he truly is. Until then, we have the Bible to tell us what we need to know. Until then, what we seek to understand…

Will be revealed.
