It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8 but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
You may have pleasant or unpleasant memories of the playground and the ritual of picking teams for the game played that day. The popular and athletic were chosen first while the rest… Well thank God that he does not choose his children that way. He chooses who he chooses and loves who he loves. Psalm 78:68 tells us “…he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves.” Here in Deuteronomy, Moses wrote that there was nothing special about Israel that caused God to choose them. They were the little people. He may as easily chosen Egypt, the mighty empire. But he didn’t.
That is comforting to us who wonder if we’ll ever be good enough to merit God’s love for us. Relax, you will never get there. If we could, Jesus never would have come to earth because we didn’t need him. That is where his love and mercy come in. He died for all mankind, not the talented beautiful people, but those who are broken as well. He chose us for salvation even though we are the least of these. He did so because he promised he would, because he loves us. Praise him today because, as Eugene Merrill says…
He chooses those he loves and loves those he chose.
