Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.
“Act natural.” You often hear this when co-conspirators are in danger of detection. The idea is to blend in, as if to say, “nothing to see here”. Peter had walked with Jesus since that fateful day in Luke 5 and the miraculous catch of fish. He told Jesus to depart from him due to Peter’s sinfulness. Jesus did not leave him but proceeded to lead him. Peter would return the favor in these verses by abandoning and denying him, following him, only at a safe distance to avoid detection. Then when the crowd settled down to warm themselves together, Peter blended in to “act natural”. Nothing to see here.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to see just how far Peter went to stay safe when danger approached. He was not alone. The other disciples were nowhere to be found. Jesus was great when he was healing and feeding the multitudes but now it was real. The Romans would not be experiencing their defeat at the hands of a conquering King. The empire would live on for centuries. What Peter and everyone else failed to realize was that this King would live on for eternity. We will learn that when people look at us there should be something to see as we…
Act supernaturally.
