There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where the LORD made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. 10 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.

“Unless I see evidence, I will not believe it.” The spirit of doubting Thomas is alive and well. Many people use this as their motto for living. Question everything is the way Timothy Leary famously put it. Trust no one is another way and, sadly, sound advice in these troubled times. If someone in ancient Israel refused to believe that God was real and had entered into covenant with his people, the evidence would be overwhelming. There was the ark built at his command. There were the tablets with the first Bible, the Ten Commandments, placed inside. Then of course, the cloud filled the house of the Lord to remove any doubt that remained.

When speaking about God to people, we encounter questions like, “What God?” or, “Which God?” “Show me”, they say. We can show them evidence for the covenant with us through Jesus Christ. We can show them the Bible that proclaims him centuries before his birth. We can show them testimony from the four witnesses who either saw it or researched it. Finally, we can show them, not a cloud of his presence, but the Holy Spirit, the presence of God in our lives expressed through our hope, joy, and love. Come see his glory as it…

Fills the house of the Lord.
