Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
“I know who I am”. That is a statement from a person who is comfortable in their own skin and knows their limitations. But what if that person is the Great I Am? Jesus knew who he was, God the Son, where he came from, highest heaven, and where he was going, to the throne. That is what makes his actions of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday so amazing. He “laid aside” his glory, just as he laid aside his outer garments. He cast off his kingly robes and replaced them with a towel. He dressed like a slave in order to wash the feet of those who would flee for their lives in a few hours when he was arrested. He is the very picture of the suffering servant.
There have been many examples of servant sacrifice since this one. I think of single mothers working two or more jobs so their children could go to college. I think of the man who gets out of a lifeboat for a woman and child. None of these can compare to the servant sacrifice displayed by the King of kings, Jesus Christ. He left his home to suffer humiliation and shame that we alone deserved. He became one of us so that we could become like he is, a son and daughter. Man hath no greater love than this. He washed Judas’ feet, he died for Peter, and he rose again for all of us. Bow down today in praise that…
You know who he is.
