Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,

      for in you my soul takes refuge;

                  in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,

      till the storms of destruction pass by.

            2       I cry out to God Most High,

      to God who fulfills his purpose for me.

            3       He will send from heaven and save me;

      he will put to shame him who tramples on me. Selah

Here in Cape May, in 2016, we had a storm with damaging straight line winds of 80 MPH. My phone started buzzing that there was a tornado warning and to take cover immediately. It was then that I realized I had no idea what to do or where to go. I suddenly felt alone and very vulnerable.I ended up crouched next to a filing cabinet and, fortunately, there was no tornado. How blessed we are that, along with the psalmist, we are assured that we have refuge from the storms of life! We can take refuge in the shadow of his wings like baby birds. There is nothing more vulnerable than a baby bird. They cannot feed themselves or leave the nest on their own. They need the shadow of their mother’s wings for protection.

Today, let’s be like baby birds, even though we can feed ourselves just fine and then hop in the car to go get more food. Just as I felt vulnerable in that storm, we all will be caught in fierce winds and will need shelter and protection. Praise the Lord that in those moments, we can remember Psalm 57 and know that we are already under the wings of God. Do not be afraid. The Lord will keep you and protect you from the storm. In him you can…

Take cover immediately!
