The LORD is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
5 Who is like the LORD our God,
who is seated on high,
6 who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
7 He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
8 to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
9 He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the LORD!
“You dare to come to me…”These self-absorbed delusional words come from the phony Wizard of Oz from the eponymous movie. While there was temporary fear until they know who the Wizard really was, once the bubble burst, he was rather ordinary. Not so our God. This psalm makes a similar statement to the movie. Really, who is like the LORD our God? Rhetorical questions require no reply but this one demands the answer; no one. The psalmist listed the evidence of God’s great works; lifting the downtrodden to a lofty place.
The evidence for God’s existence is here today. He rescues the needy and vulnerable by the mighty hand of his church, of which Jesus Christ is the head. He helps the poor through homeless ministries all over the nation. He sent Jesus to the cross so we could be “princes”, sitting at the King’s table each time we take Communion. He gives us the gift of children, and grandchildren. He is indeed high above the heavens. The Wizard of Oz is just a movie. Who is like the LORD our God? No one. He is the…
Great and Powerful King.
