For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
and do not return there but water the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
I have a secret love for rainy days and love to read by the window. I also love snow and have often wondered why people hate it. To those like minded people out there, vindication is found in Isaiah 55! The Lord explains to us in these verses that everything is included in God’s plan for the world, including things that we do not like. The preceding verses speak of the LORD and his sovereignty. These verses tell us we are included as well and that when God speaks, it is truth. So this is not a passage for us rain and snow lovers, it is a declaration of the truth of Scripture.
God’s word, when read or preached, is our greatest revelation of his power and majesty. No part of it is outdated, useless, or false. Verse 11 is a great comfort to those who sometimes feel God is an absentee landlord and his property is falling apart. He will accomplish what he purposes. We find that purpose in the Bible. He purposes that his people will never be abandoned but will be preserved to the end. He purposes that Jesus will return in glory to restore his property to perfect working order. He purposes that all who believe in him will be showered with his grace and love, to which we reply…
Let it rain.
