Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD.

“Happy days are here again!” “Better days ahead!” These are common promises made by politicians, that everything will be okay if you just vote for them. The nation of Israel needed good news of better days ahead because they had not known happy days for some time. Assyria took over the Northern Kingdom in 722 BC and Jerusalem would shortly fall right about the time these words were written. That is one of the reasons they needed good news. The first reason was the 613 statutes of the Law in the Torah, the conditions of their covenant with God. they had no way of obeying that and Deuteronomy 28 made it clear that they needed help. The second reason is that the covenant would be replaced with a New Covenant. It would not be like the old one. Good News! Grace is coming!

Many live their lives today as if the covenant God made through Moses still applies to them. That is bad news. For the rest of us, we thrive in a New Covenant, knowing that by grace alone, we have a right relationship with God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. The next time you feel you’ve blown it or that God gave up on you, read this chapter. You will see that the sins of your past are gone.
