How great are your works, O LORD!
Your thoughts are very deep!
6 The stupid man cannot know;
the fool cannot understand this:
7 that though the wicked sprout like grass
and all evildoers flourish,
they are doomed to destruction forever;
8 but you, O LORD, are on high forever.
While the word stupid has been a vital part of my vocabulary since childhood, it is rarely found in Scripture. In fact, only Psalms and Proverbs use the word. Fool, on the other hand, is all over Scripture, 45 times in the Old Testament. It is interesting to see how the psalmist uses it. It sounds like Psalm 14 and 53, “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” The very people who claimed to be smart in the psalmist’s day were the ones who were too daft to see that, of course there is a God! The psalm predicts a grim end for them.
There is a Tik Tok trend called “God is a Freak”, a vehicle for “exvangelicals” to tell the world what is wrong with God and the church. I am sad that this is happening among our young people and we share part of the blame for not always representing Jesus accurately. On the other hand, I am deeply saddened because the words of this psalm apply to these lost souls. If there is no God, they are right and the wicked will sprout like grass and flourish and there is nothing we can do to stop it. If God is real, nothing will stop him. In that case going viral for mocking God might not be the wisest course of action. In fact…
There is a word for that.
