8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
“Why can’t we all just get along?” and “Let’s agree to disagree.” are two examples of the tolerance that is desired in the world. Sometimes it is necessary to be intolerant though. No one tolerates murder and rape for instance. The Apostle Paul went right to the heart of the matter in the Galatian churches immediately after the greeting. He was intolerant because he saw false gospels being taught. People were told that they were not saved without circumcision and the law. He reacted with some of the strongest language in his letters. Let them be accursed. Then he repeated it. Paul wanted the Galatians to get the message right, that there is one true God and one true gospel. By definition, all others are false.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as we begin a new series in Paul’s letter to the Galatians, a group of churches in Asia Minor. We will see that Ecclesiastes is right, that there is nothing new under the sun. We are hearing preaching that undermines the true gospel. Be good and go to heaven. You can have your best life now. Your faith will make you healthy and wealthy. Paul would use strong words for the authors of such preaching. Let them be accursed. The true gospel says we are all accursed but Jesus went to the cross and said…
Let them be atoned.
