The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
3 You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
Light pollution is one the more obvious forms of pollution we can experience in our everyday lives. Down here in Cape May, we should be able to see the stars very clearly because of the dark sea underneath but because of the light, we cannot see them as clearly. By the same token, we can see which way we are going. Isaiah gave this prophecy for Israel who had no light. Walking in pitch blackness can be disorienting and dangerous. The light that would come for them would light their way to a Savior, described by Isaiah in later verses and destined for Christmas cards;
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
We in the world of 2021 have more than enough light but what is it illuminating? Is it lighting our way to our own destruction or upwards to the heavens where Salvation awaits us? This Christmas Eve, come to Cape Community Church and light a candle to the…
Light of the world…
