Better is a dry morsel with quiet

than a house full of feasting with strife.

The first thing I noticed about Vicki’s family was how loud and boisterous they were. Vicki noticed my family was quiet. Maybe too quiet. Her family dealt with things and hashed them out. Mine didn’t, which led to explosions later. Perhaps that is what this proverb is telling us. Some of the happiest families, like Vicki’s, were poor. Some of the wealthiest families, those we see on TV, are miserable. Witness the next “shocking” split on the cover of People magazine. There is a lot to be said for contentment being worth more than silver or gold. The Apostle Paul may have had this in mind when he advised Timothy about the church in Ephesus. He stressed unity to that church in Ephesians.

Those of us in America would do well to heed this proverb. The American dream is to have all you desire, house, cars, boat, summer home, and peace. That is usually the missing part of the equation. That is because without God, there is no peace. America is trying to live without God. There will be no peace when all we seek is peace for ourselves and not others. There will be feasting; and strife. Without Christ, there is no Christmas; no joy, no hope, and definitely no…

Peace on earth.
