His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

The question dogging generations of people has been, “What is the meaning of life?” People walk this earth with all its problems and grapple to find a reason to go on. Sadly, many do not go on. That is why it is urgent to pass along this message from Peter in his last letter. Peter went on right up to the end, which was his own martyrdom around the same time as Paul’s. In the face of persecution, his audience needed the reassurances found in these verses. The divine power of Jesus Christ and the knowledge of him are the key to life. His promises are for now and for always, not just for this world that is perishing. Without knowledge of Jesus, people miss his glory and excellence.

How many people in the world need desperately to hear this message! It begins with the simple knowledge of him. We can scream, “Know the Lord!”, but Jeremiah advised against it. It is better to have the knowledge of Jesus in our hearts so it overflows with our loving words and actions. They will know the Lord but the Lord will reveal himself. For now, become partakers of the divine nature yourself and you will be fit to pass it on, like putting the oxygen mask on yourself before helping your children put theirs on. That way…

You will all be saved.
