Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

and in sin did my mother conceive me.

6       Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,

and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Vicki and I are soon expecting our first grandchild. In fact, the mother to be, Lauren, picked Psalm 51 for today’s devotional. I saw verses 5 and 6 and thought of our future addition. He or she will be beautiful and above average in intelligence of course…and born into sin and in need of a Savior. We have a hard time with that. People claim that babies are born and they are so innocent but sadly, they will lie, cheat and steal before they can walk. David had sinned grievously with Bathsheba and this psalm is his cry for a Savior. He was a keen observer of human folly and sin and he was an even keener participant in it. Ever since Adam, we have had sin imputed to us. We need a Savior.

There are those who say man is basically good. I suggest as required reading any history book on Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Maoist China. Even preachers fall into the trap of saying that there is good in us and God can make us better, and wealthier. As required reading, I suggest these preachers read…the Bible, especially Psalm 51. We are born in sin. We live in slavery to sin. There is only one cure to being born in sin. It is being born again in Christ. When we are in Christ, the wisdom that comes only from the Lord inhabits our hearts and we can see a newborn baby as an image bearer of God and…

In need of a Savior.
