And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Most good stories have a good takeaway but something deeper underneath. Lord of the Rings is a good example. Frodo making things right by returning the ring tells a deeper story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The obvious application here is the fact that, if Jesus can calm a storm on the Sea of Galilee, he can calm the storms in the Life of Believers. There is an even deeper message and it revolves around the question the disciples asked. Who is Jesus?

When Jesus asked the disciples who he was, Peter exclaimed that he was the Christ. How did Peter know this? Jesus said the Holy Spirit revealed it to him. That is true. Peter most likely also had this episode in mind. Jesus did miraculous, life-saving things in his life and he remembered them.

That is our marching orders for the day for. Remember what the Lord has done in our lives that saved us and showed his great power. It might have been a deliverance from disease, from disaster, or even death. Then we will not be afraid. What sort of man is this?…

He is the Christ, the Son of the Living God!
