Lord, you have been our dwelling place

      in all generations.

2       Before the mountains were brought forth,

or ever you had formed the earth and the world,

from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

3       You return man to dust

and say, “Return, O children of man!”

4       For a thousand years in your sight

are but as yesterday when it is past,

or as a watch in the night.

If you are having a rough day today, you may find comfort in knowing that before the earth was formed, God knew this day would come for you. He also knows how it ends. In fact, he knows the number of your days and returns us to the dust in his good time. The Psalmist praised the Lord for his timeless power and steadfast watch over us. This means he had nothing to worry about because it was in the Lord’s hands. One might ask why we pray if this is preordained. Ask the psalmist because this is a prayer of praise for just that. He does not need our prayers but he loves our prayers.

As you go about your day today, see how you react to minor frustrations. Like me, do you sometimes plunge into despair at little problems? Let this psalm speak to you today that no matter what happens, God controls it, God knows it, God is using it in his perfect plan and God will never cease watching over you. In response, let us see every obstacle, not as a problem but as an opportunity to witness the great works of the Lord. Whatever happens today, cast your burden on the Lord and he will sustain you. Until tomorrow…

Or a thousand years.
