Psalm 99:6-7
Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called upon his name.
They called to the LORD, and he answered them.
7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;
they kept his testimonies
and the statute that he gave them.
As a boy, I wanted to be Ted Williams, and I practiced my baseball swing so I would look and hit like the Splendid Splinter. Ted Williams is in the Hall of Fame. I am not, but I could still play baseball. Here, the psalmist, whose name we do not know, celebrated and, perhaps emulated, the heroes of the past, two of which, Moses and Samuel, are in the Hebrews 11 Hall of Faith. Their great talent? They called upon the Lord. They believed the Lord’s promises, and they practiced hard at keeping the law. The psalmist emulated these heroes well in this psalm of praise for God’s awesome power and holiness. That is good practice for eternity.
Many of us will never be famous but if we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we will be inducted into the Great Hall of Witnesses that worship the Lamb forever. There we will worship alongside Moses, Aaron, and Samuel, as well as Peter, John, and Paul! There will be no Hall of Fame but there will be one throne with our Lord seated as we cast our crowns at his feet. May we begin practicing today, emulating our hero, Jesus Christ, and becoming Christlike. May we be found to be faithful worshipers among these heroes of the faith.
O Heavenly Father, only you are deserving of praise and emulation. May we be more like Jesus Christ and practice his ways until we worship him forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
