Psalm 138:4-6

All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O LORD,

for they have heard the words of your mouth,

5       and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD,

for great is the glory of the LORD.

6       For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly,

but the haughty he knows from afar.

Man aspires to climb to the pinnacle of accomplishment and power, with the office of king, prime minister, or president, being the peak. In their formative years in public school, our children are actually taught the self destructive attributes of hubris and selfish ambition. They are being set up for disappointment and rebellion against the earthly power and against God. The psalmist had a better worldview and it leads to a healthy submission and subsequent freedom. Even the king will bow before God and call him Lord and Master. In submission, they will sing to the King for his grace toward him. The lowly, also, will be lifted up, while the ambitious will gain their rewards here on earth at the expense of missing out on the Lord’s blessings.

That is a proper way to look at the world, therefore, it is a better worldview than that which is foisted on an unsuspecting generation of children. No matter who we are or where we are in the pecking order, we are all in line waiting to worship the Lord. Today, may we be lowly and humble before the Lord. we will be lifted far higher than we could ever climb.

O Heavenly Father, you are the high and mighty King, no matter how high and mighty we strive to be. Help us to realize that we are kicking against the goads when we seek our own glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
