Psalm 99:6-7

      Moses and Aaron were among his priests,

      Samuel also was among those who called upon his name.

      They called to the LORD, and he answered them.

            7       In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;

      they kept his testimonies

      and the statute that he gave them.

We stand on the shoulders of giants. That phrase has been used in many different contexts, from government to church leadership. The giants referenced by the psalmist are important in the history of the Jews. Moses was the first leader of the Hebrews, Aaron was the first High Priest, and Samuel was the last judge before the king the people clamored for, Saul, and the one God chose for his covenant, David. These three were definitely men to aspire to but they don’t stand on the pedestal for very long before the psalmist gets to the LORD, who is above all things. He was in the pillar of cloud in the wilderness.

Indeed, the Bible teaches that, not only was God the Father involved in the Exodus and the kings, but Jesus, God the Son, was as well. Paul said so in 1 Corinthians 10:4

…and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

Wherever they went, these greats of the faith, Jesus was with them until the end of that age. Then he walked among us. Now he is with us always, until the end of this age. We don’t need to stand on giants’ shoulders. We stand amazed in the presence.

O Heavenly Father, thank you for the Son, Jesus the Nazarene. We stand amazed in his presence until every knee bows and every tongue confesses that he is Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
