Psalm 140
I say to the LORD, You are my God;
give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!
7 O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked;
do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
There is an old joke about husbands and wives which goes, “What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is ours.” That is an attempt at a humorous corruption of covenant language. In a real marriage covenant, it is shared possessions, ideally a joint bank account, and an attitude of love and obedience toward each other. “You are MY God”, is covenant language in this lament psalm of David. The enemy was laying “David traps” all around and David could have felt helpless but for his faith that God was there. That is why he could call on the Lord so boldly, almost commanding God to hear him. He does this because he knows he hears.
We sometimes yell at God because we don’t feel he is doing what we want him to without realizing that God has a perfect reason. It is not his will. But when we love the Lord and know he loves to help us in times of trouble, we will have no trouble telling God to intervene in the world. If we did not believe he could, there would be no point in prayer at all. Today, boldly enter the throne room and fall on your knees. He will see and hear your needs.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are a covenant God and that you are OUR God. May we take full advantage of your love for us in prayer. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
