But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.

As a pastor, I hear stories of suffering in people that challenge my ability to comprehend it. My ability to empathize is challenged because I have never had this happen to me. Such is the story of Naomi. She had all a woman in that time wanted; a husband and sons. The line of progeny was seemingly safe. Then all three died and not only was the prospect of the line continuing decreased, but her hope was gone. She shared her hopelessness with Orpah and Ruth, her daughters-in-law. They had no reason to stay and wallow in misery. There was one hope. Her name was Ruth.

Our volunteers at the Warming Center have heard similar stories of despair and the loss of hope after the loss of everything they held dear. They need the hope of eternal life. Ruth’s selflessness and love for Naomi was rewarded by her descendants, among them a great grandson, David, and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This story in Ruth teaches us that wherever hope is lost, it can be found. This descendant of Ruth and Boaz is the return of hope for a lost and dying world. No matter how dark it is today, seek out the Light of the World!

Dear Lord, thank you for shining light into the darkness and for the hope of salvation. We pray for those groping in the dark today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
