15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

In the here and now, we have trouble planning for the future and pour all our resources into what we want today, with little thought for tomorrow. Kids do that. When I had a dollar in my pocket, I immediately bought junk with it, not thinking of the future and saving it up for something that lasts. These are all things the Jewish Christians of 65 AD needed to hear. And it is what the Jewish and Gentile Christians of 2024 need to hear. Paul knew it in Romans 5:6,

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

We are ungodly in our hearts so we think of the here and now, so when we are lonely, we get into bad relationships. When we are in despair financially, we contemplate criminal means of getting more money, when we are in despair emotionally, we plunge into drugs and alcohol, when we are in despair spiritually, we look for here and now solutions there too. Those are incorrect responses to God the Son and his love for you. The correct response to Jesus Christ and his offering of himself to you is worship and offering of yourself to him. All other responses to Jesus are insults to God. Next time God “disappoints” you, think about the future. And the past.

Dear Lord, thank you for the past offering of Christ and for the future paradise with you. Help us to think of that day when we are caught up in this day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
