Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
So and so is a great guy. If you don’t believe me, ask him! We all know the type. Here is the opposite. The author of Hebrews presented the mere mortal Christians as “holy” brothers with a “heavenly” calling. Then he called the Son of God an apostle, like Peter, and a high priest, like Aaron. Then Jesus was compared to Moses, the murdering leader of the Hebrew slaves. What is going on? Lots. Holy can mean sinless and it can mean set apart. The Christians were holy, set apart. Apostles were sent out. Jesus, the apostle, was sent to the cross. The high priest represented the people to God and God to the people. Jesus, the Great High Priest, represents the people by taking on their sins. He not only represents God. He is God.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to see how we can be holy and heavenly called. God set us apart from our old life and the world of sin and called us to his heavenly kingdom. That calls for an earthly response from those who know they are not holy as in sinless, nor heavenly in their lifestyle. That response is to be faithful in believing in the Sent One, Jesus Christ, and the Great High Priest for the forgiveness of sin. He will make this upside down world right side up.
Dear Lord, thank you for making sense of a topsy-turvy world by being faithful to your promises. May we be holy and heavenly called. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
