And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the LORD, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.

How often do parents punish their children, perfectly proportionate to their disobedience, then take them in their arms and take them out for ice cream? We could call it a failing on our part but look at this example of God sparing the stiff-necked people from the death they deserved, only to take them into his arms and renew the covenant with them, giving them manna. He even promised awesome works done on their behalf by the God who could and would destroy them but for his steadfast love. He promised to make Abraham a great nation and his faithfulness did just that. He was just getting started. Miracles would follow.

We are like Israel, disobey, receive grace, repeat. But this time, God did miracles in our lives that the Hebrews would never see. He came to earth as a man in the greatest moment in history. He taught and performed miracles of healing and provision with the loaves and the fishes, like the manna from heaven. We worship him, like the woman at the well, for the awesome thing that he did in knowing us. More than that, he died for us and became our Lord. Let all the people among us see this awesome thing!

Dear Lord, you are the awesome powerful God who corrects, restores, and renews. Thank you for your infinite goodness in forgiving our sins. May we be in awe daily. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
