Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. 3 No one shall come up with you, and let no one be seen throughout all the mountain. Let no flocks or herds graze opposite that mountain.” 4 So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first. And he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone.
Before on-demand ever existed in television, we used to wait all week for our favorite show to come on, only to find in many instances that it was a rerun. We had seen it and the disappointment is still palpable today. If you are reading through Exodus and you get to this passage, you may have a similar sensation. Is this a repeat? Thankfully, yes. God did this in Exodus 19 but the people failed miserably.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to see why this rerun is good. Rather than destroy the Hebrews, God, who has the power to destroy and build, had mercy on them, rewrote the 10 Commandments, and renewed the covenant with them. In both cases, God’s power and justice were on evidence as even the livestock could not approach God. But we can. Jesus died on that cross and that veil was torn so this congregation could worship the Lord in song, and pray to him. Imperfect people can participate in the perfect plan of a perfect God.
Dear Lord, we worship you and sing praises to you for what you have done, repeatedly forgiving us. Help us to see your power and mercy and worship you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
