Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;

      all day long an attacker oppresses me;

            2       my enemies trample on me all day long,

      for many attack me proudly.

            3       When I am afraid,

      I put my trust in you.

            4       In God, whose word I praise,

      in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.

      What can flesh do to me?

We know the look on a loved one’s face when they are in distress but we don’t always know the cause of the anguish. In most cases, we don’t know David’s circumstances that caused him to cry out but here we know. David was so afraid of Saul that he felt safer with the Philistines in Gath, of Goliath fame. What seems like exaggeration on David’s part is the actual truth. Wherever David went, trouble either followed, or was waiting for him there, or both. Yet, in all that, David again differentiated himself from king Saul and trusted God.

This may be you today, running from trouble only to find more trouble waiting for you. It may be a small problem or a serious attack. In either case, praise the Lord that there is a way out of not just these problems, but the problem of sin! Jesus came to teach us, and to suffer and die so our problems on this earth would not be followed by the troubles of Hell. What can flesh do to me? Lots, in this world but for our eternal salvation, we can trust in the Lord because his troubles were our salvation.

Dear Lord, thank you for sympathizing with our plight because of the cross. Help us to remember the cross and that this day will end but not that day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
