Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you.
One of my favorite things about the book of Acts, my favorite Bible book, is verse 1 which describes Luke’s gospel as “all Jesus BEGAN to do and teach”. The following 28 chapters tell of what he did next. Here in 2 Samuel 7, we see what God began to do in the life of his servant David. He called him from the smelly sheep of the pasture and anointed him as king over his chosen people. The following 7 verses tell of what God did next. He made a covenant with David that his offspring would be on the throne forever, culminating in the Son of David, Jesus Christ.
You may feel that you have run the race and lost, that your life has been inconsequential and that there is nothing left for you. Read these verses again, and rejoice! Your life to this point is only what Jesus BEGAN to do and teach. He called you from the stench of your past life of sin. He made you a son or daughter of the King. There are more chapters in which the story of Jesus will play itself out in miracles of salvations witnessed and growth beyond your wildest imaginations. The story is to be continued.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are never finished with us until you call us home. May we be attentive to the story you are writing through us today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
