Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Us and them. This would seem to be adversarial in most instances but in the above verses, the Triune God says “Let us…”. This implies a plurality of divinity in which there can be a conversation between the persons of the Trinity regarding “them”. The “them” in this instance is us, man. The Triune God created the universe, then man, and gave them dominion, something that can only be bestowed on us. In no way can we claim it for ourselves. The Triune God has deigned to create us in “our own image”.
The church should be united like they were when they formed the Nicene Creed. Sadly, in this age of tribalism, the chances of evangelicals in America coming together in the tradition of the credal system to formulate a one-minded statement of faith regarding the Trinity seem very bleak indeed. However, with the help of the Triune God, the Holy Spirit, which proceeded from the Father and the Son, will guide and direct us in our search for the answer to the question that Jesus posed to the disciples in Matthew 16:15,
“But who do you say that I am?”
Dear Lord, thank you that you have revealed yourself to us and given us dominion. May we be thankful and united in our love for your power. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
