Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the LORD has spoken we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD.

In Genesis 1, God made the sun and moon…and the stars. Billions and billions of them, As Carl Sagan used to say. It sounds like an afterthought for God to create massive stars but that is our God. He speaks the impossible into existence from nothing. Science cannot comprehend that. Here, Moses was called to gather the people to confirm the Covenant God made with them. He told them what was involved and the people said naively that of course, they would do all that God commanded! Then, just like God making the stars, it says,

And Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD.

Almost as an afterthought, Moses wrote the beginnings of the Bible!

Just as the people in succeeding generations forgot the covenant and thus disobeyed in the time of the judges, the word of God had been forgotten and ignored because the fathers did not teach the word to their succeeding generations. Every time it was rediscovered, first by King Josiah in 2 Kings 22, and then by Ezra in Nehemiah 8, there was a revival and the people proclaimed that they would heed the word of God. May we be teaching the word to our children and grandchildren so that instead of drifting away, they would cling to the Bible and seek to obey it.

Dear Lord, thank you for not forgetting us when we forgot you. May we be from this day on, hearers, doers, and teachers of the word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
