12 How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife? 13 Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’
We all love our comfort zone, that area where we are comfortable and competent. Then it all changes. The Peter Principle says “employees are promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent”. Moses seemed to reach that pinnacle as he said in verse 12 above. He had been chosen by God to oppose Pharaoh and lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Then he became a head of state and needed help. He needed wise, understanding, and experienced men. The NIV translated that last one as respected and that is key too. Moses would have been incompetent on his own.
Thank God that he never leaves us to do this alone! He calls pastors, elders, deacons, teachers, encouragers, and he surrounds them with people who can do what they can’t. That is the sign of a healthy church. Moses needed a Joshua and many others. A church needs all these people working together in harmony and not envious or combative. It is rare and glorious. I am blessed by each person God called to Cape Community Church. I suspect everyone here is blessed by each other as we toil together for our Lord and Savior. This thing is good for us to do.
Dear Lord, thank you for calling us to fill a role in your church. May we be faithful in our part of the body and obedient to your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
