Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
There are several genres of movie that we see in our streaming services; drama, romance, comedy etc. There are some combos as well; romcom and dramedy, that combine genre. It is the same with the Psalms. We separate them into types, praise, thanksgiving, lament, wisdom, trust etc. Sometimes, we can combine two and verse 1 of Psalm 16 seems to do just that. It starts just like a lament psalm with a cry of “Preserve me!”, but quickly shifts to a psalm of trust, which is the rest of the psalm. We can combine lament and trust but unfortunately, “lust” is a poorly combined term. Let’s go with trust because the following verses display a confidence indicative of a man after God’s own heart. He cries out to the Lord but with the full assurance that God is worthy of trust.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow, especially if there is a cry that you need to make to the Lord. We will gather together and learn together that we are not alone when we cry. He hears us and we can trust him to keep his promise to never leave us nor forsake us. That would be enough but he promises so much more. Come and see what glorious things we can bank on in Psalm 16 and worship him for his wonderful deeds, both now and in the future. He will preserve you if you take shelter in Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you for the psalms that assure us of your presence and protection. Help us to worship you for that and for your promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
