For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Conventional wisdom is the agreed upon opinion of the public and experts, according to Wikipedia. They strangely include accepted religious judgment under the name orthodoxy as meaning the same thing. Sorry. Not the same thing. Orthodoxy is what is true. It means “right thinking”, in this case about God. It matters little how many believe it. Take Jesus. Not many believed yet he is Lord. Paul differentiated empirical evidence and conventional Greek wisdom from the Lord Jesus Christ and showed Jesus to be far superior. No matter how foolish it looks to the “knowledgeable and wise”, Christ’s power cannot be denied.

It may look like conventional wisdom says there is no God and that the church is dying. It may look like faith cannot argue with science. In both cases, looks are deceiving. On a global scale, the church is alive and well. In the field of science, the truths that nothing can come out of nothing and the concept of first cause are just two pieces of compelling evidence for God. People today demand signs and people pore over the internet seeking wisdom. In the Bible, those who are called find the power and wisdom of God. On this we are agreed.

Dear Lord, thank you that you do not show yourself to clever people but to us. Help us to humble ourselves to show Jesus to the wise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
