The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man,
to see if there are any who understand,
who seek after God.
3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
there is none who does good,
not even one.
I have never thought much about professional ice hockey until I saw a minor league game. I then had a profound respect for the NHL. Looking down from our seats on truly terrible hockey is a truly terrible analogy for what it must be like for God looking down on us from heaven, as David described in verse 3. God, in his holiness, watches us fumble and stumble through life and not one of us is worth watching. Yet he watches OVER us and loves us so much that he came down to walk with us. Jesus Christ came down to teach us to do better but also to realize that we cannot match his standard and must therefore believe in him.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and see that we are all like minor league hockey players but worse, deserve death for our sins. But God promised through this psalm that salvation would come out of Zion, out of David himself! Through this salvation, God would still look down on us but this time, he will impute the righteousness of Christ and we will be enabled to do the will of the Father through the Holy Spirit. This should change the way we “play the game”. It should help us to realize that we are not alone, that God is with us and guiding us. God alone is good!
Dear Lord, thank you that you have won the game and that we get the prize of eternal life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
