So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel!
When our children are born, we go through their lives in our mind and imagine what great things they will grow up to accomplish and we dream of their happiness and success. This child’s name was Obed and there is no record of him having done anything of note. Nonetheless, he is recorded here in Ruth and in two other very important documents. These would be the gospels according to Matthew and Luke. This is because, while his life may have been ordinary by most standards, his genealogy has no peer. He fathered a man named Jesse who fathered a man after God’s own heart, one David. Obed was the ancestor of Jesus!
If you feel like your life has been nondescript up to this point and maybe even pointless, think of Obed. He may have died with that same feeling but there is nothing further from the truth. He simply did not know how crucial he was to the future of Creation. You don’t know how crucial you are either. There may be people who have been saved by watching your faithful life and witness and you know nothing about it. If you are walking in the Lord, unashamed of the gospel, rest assured, you are making his name renowned in all the earth.
Dear Lord, thank you that you have a plan for each one of us in your kingdom. Help us to fulfill your role for us and rejoice. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
