The LORD is in his holy temple;
the LORD’s throne is in heaven;
his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.
5 The LORD tests the righteous,
but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
6 Let him rain coals on the wicked;
fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.
7 For the LORD is righteous;
he loves righteous deeds;
the upright shall behold his face.
Life can seem like a coin toss at times, with life-changing decisions coming hard and fast with little time to deliberate because everything changes so fast. David had to decide between fight or flight in this psalm. His advisors said a spell in the mountains would be nice this time of year. David, in this psalm, teaches us how to see this ever changing life with more certainty. In this question of fight or flight, David looked at the Lord, in his holy temple, on his throne, steadfast, unmoving, unchanging, and sovereign.
David took comfort in that and we can do the same today. We can make decisions of huge importance, knowing that when things change and shift all around us, one thing remains constant. God is in his heaven and we are on earth to follow him and serve him. We are secure in the knowledge that the upright will see his face. But I sin, you might reply. Good reply. You do. But, Jesus paid it all. Therefore, you will see his face if you believe in his saving grace and mercy.
Dear Lord, thank you that life is not a coin toss when we can enter your throne room and ask the immutable Creator what to do. May we seek your face today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
