My heart is in anguish within me;

      the terrors of death have fallen upon me.

            5       Fear and trembling come upon me,

      and horror overwhelms me.

            6       And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!

      I would fly away and be at rest;

            7       yes, I would wander far away;

      I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah

            8       I would hurry to find a shelter

      from the raging wind and tempest.”

There are times when people jokingly say they wish they were never born, and then there are people who really feel that way about their entire lives. It is those that can resonate with the above Psalm from David. It is a lament that the last vestige of happiness has fled, as has his closest friend. It is that aloneness that animates the misery of the psalm. All the words that cause anxiety are present. Anguish, terror, death, fear, trembling, and horror are a part of life but for David, on the run, it is his life.

Such is life for many today who have undergone 4 years of terror since the pandemic, only to find that life after the storm is merely preparation for the next storm. They are in need of what God’s people have and David tells us what that is in verse 16,

            But I call to God,

      and the LORD will save me.

Today, praise the Lord that he is with you and pray for those who have only the raging wind to cry out to. They are lost in the tempest and need Jesus to calm the storm.

Dear Lord, we do praise you for saving us from the storm but we pray for those who need rescue. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
