39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Josh McDowell in his famous book, More Than a Carpenter, asked this about Jesus, “Why is it that his name, more than the name of any other religious leader, causes irritation?” It even happened while he was in his earthly ministry. Here, some Pharisees came out to see what would happen when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. They did not like what they saw…or heard. They were calling this Jesus, King! They would not like this for two reasons. First, Rome did not take kindly to treason and that is what the Pharisees heard in this proclamation. Second, they did not believe Jesus was who he said he was. The question remains, why did they get so irritated? The answer is the same as today. There is power in the name of Jesus Christ.
This is because he is God and he is alive. His tomb is empty while other leader’s tombs are occupied. He is the King they said he was on that Palm Sunday and nothing, not the arrest, not the interrogation, or the crucifixion, could change that. He rose from the dead to sit on his throne. The crowd was loud in their worship of Jesus Christ. Today, let us not be silent. May there be no cause for the stones to cry out that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of prophecy and the salvation of his people. Cry out, “My Lord and my God!”
My Lord and my God, thank you for dying for me and rising from the tomb. Help me to cry out that you are the King. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
