If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Once we have achieved everything we have ever wanted in life, we can realize the letdown in thinking that it would provide fulfillment to our lives. A mountain climber who reaches the summit of the highest peak can feel there is nothing left to accomplish. This stems from an erroneous view of the word “life”. Here, Paul wrote to the church in Colossae where this life is to be found. It is hidden in Christ but the life of Christ is in plain sight, both to his followers in ourselves and those who witness his life in us. That is why we can seek the things that are above, because that is where our life is. The old me has died.
Many possessions I longed for as a young man are sitting in our home somewhere. They seemed so important then but now, by the grace of God, the things above have replaced them. That is because Christ who is our life has appeared and saved us. Now, what is important is that we will appear with him in glory. We will not be holding onto any possession then. We will cling to our life in Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you that the things on earth are growing strangely dim in the light of your glory and grace. Help us cling to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
