“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

In the school that meets in our church, I teach Intro to Logic to 5th and 6th graders. In yesterday’s lesson, we studied the logic of the Golden Rule, the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. If you look it up, you will find that it is a general principle for kind living with no mention of the Bible verse that made it a well known proverb. It was instructive to ask questions like this. What would the world be like if everyone lived by this principle? The kids had the answers. There would be no war, no prisons, no keys, because no one would do anything they did not want done to them. More than a mere general principle, Jesus says this is a summation of the law and the prophets.

Now it is our turn to imagine a world where our governments and armies began to use this principle. No more would there be an unjust war because there would be no war at all. That is the world we look forward to, the one Jesus promised in the gospels and John described in Revelation. In that world on that day, there will be no need for keys because there will be no need for locks. There will be no more hatred or fighting. The news would be filled with the glory of Jesus Christ on his throne. Let us wish that for ourselves and for others today.

Dear Lord, thank you for the Golden Rule. May we be faithful to it so others can see how you change lives and love the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
