Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.”
You can tell a lot about a person from a lot of things; their handwriting, their choice in clothes, the car they drive, even the WAY they drive tells alot about a person. Meet Jehu, one of the captains of the evil Ahab, king of Israel. Jehu would be anointed king of Israel himself as an antidote to the poisonous cycle begun by Ahab. Instead, Jehu immediately began a purge of the political incumbents of the day to create a power vacuum into which he would drive headlong, which, according to this verse, was the way he drove. The NIV says he drives like a madman. I think Vicki and I saw Jehu on I-76 recently, passing traffic on the shoulder. Headlong. Dangerous.
There are many lessons to be learned from this. Unfortunately, mankind is slow to learn. From this event in about 840 BC, and the rise of Communism and Fascism in the power vacuum caused by WWI, to the military coups in Africa, reckless leaders, campaigning as change agents, end up being just another example of the line in the song by the Who, Won’t Get Fooled Again. Meet the new boss; same as the old boss. Whatever our intentions, Lord Acton was right all those years ago when he said, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Today, may we surrender our power to the all powerful King Jesus.
Dear Lord, thank you that Jesus is the only King we need and the only real catalyst for change of hearts and minds. Help us to cast our vote for Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
