And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
Anyone who has seen absolutely nothing when the bedroom lights go out would swear that they are in pitch blackness. Then, slowly, the light makes itself known as the eyes acclimate and the next thing you know, you see the light. Many who are on the earth this morning see no light at all. This world is totally dark to them. But because we believe in Jesus Christ, we see the light of the world and the darkness is no longer scary. We are no longer in darkness but in Christ. What a blessing for us as we walk this broken world!
These words of Jesus are both a comfort and a call to action. We rejoice in the fact that Jesus has come as the Light of the World. We also sense the urgency of showing the light to our loved ones who remain in darkness. Our Warming Center is beginning to reflect the effects of hopelessness. Mental illness is increasing in the world, as is the suicide rate. The world is pitch black to too many people. Today, may we shine the light of Christ to someone who desperately needs it.
Dear Lord, thank you for the Light of the World and our hope in Jesus Christ. Help us to look like the darkness is gone from our lives and there is nothing but light. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
