This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Professional performers want to wow the audience with their first song so the audience knows what they are in for and stay for the whole show. With that in mind, this would seem a strange first act of Jesus in Cana, turning water into wine. It seems at worst, advocating drunkenness, and at best, an insignificant introduction to his ministry. Both miss the point. John called it a sign rather than a miracle because it was a sign of the power of God the Son, Jesus Christ. The spectacle of what he did in Cana is secondary to the sign of who he is, God in the flesh. The result was that his disciples were deepened in their faith for service.

As we walk this earth today, let us see the significance of seemingly mundane events. It just may be that my car wouldn’t start yesterday so I could talk to the man in the garage waiting room. Rather than an annoyance, it could be a sign from God for us to see his power and have our faith deepened for service. Let’s see how Jesus will manifest his glory today as we follow him wherever he goes and praise him for whatever he does.

Dear Lord, thank you for the small things in our lives that manifest your infinite power. May we be attentive to the signs you give us today so we can serve you well. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
