Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
“May they be secure who love you!
7 Peace be within your walls
and security within your towers!”
8 For my brothers and companions’ sake
I will say, “Peace be within you!”
9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good.
There is a lot going on in Israel right now with war and strife. The psalmist wrote this psalm as a pilgrimage psalm and the group has now entered the gates of the city. The awe is apparent in the description of the City of David and the temple. That is what is behind the cry for the peace of Jerusalem. He wants the peace to continue. There would indeed be bloodshed in Jerusalem, none more important than that on Golgotha, when Jesus shed his blood for the sins of the nations. He promises to build a New Jerusalem to replace the harassed and tired city that we now behold. Peace will surely be within its walls.
We live in strange times when the most oppressed people in the history of the world, the Jews, can be denounced at the United Nations and our universities as the great oppressor. It sends the signal that if the millennia long hatred of Jews continues, the 2,000 year old hatred of Christians will too. Today, pray for the peace of Jerusalem, specially for that day when true peace will come. Until then, remain secure in the hope that peace and security are found in the arms of Jesus Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are our hope and security within the walls of your church and in the arms of Jesus. Help us to pray for Jerusalem and for salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
