He stretches out the north over the void
and hangs the earth on nothing.
8 He binds up the waters in his thick clouds,
and the cloud is not split open under them.
9 He covers the face of the full moon
and spreads over it his cloud.
10 He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters
at the boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble
and are astounded at his rebuke.
There is a lot of talk today about the divide between science and faith. Many who would mock our “blind” faith now find themselves saying, in effect, “A scientist says it, I believe it, that settles it!” These verses from Job are his response in worship to his friends who got it wrong. Job ascribes great power and majesty to God and, in the process, presents some scientific acumen thousands of years before the scientific revolution. A picture of the earth from space shows it hanging on nothing. Clouds contain water that rising air keeps afloat, and then it rains, science tells us.
There need be no divide between science and faith. In fact, they can coexist quite admirably, just as they did before the scientific revolution. Science is good for finding facts but has limits. Only philosophy and faith can find the meaning of life. Only a Divine Creator can explain our very existence because nothing can come of nothing. In the line of dominoes called the universe, someone must have lined up the dominoes and pushed the first one. Let’s worship that First Mover today.
Dear Lord, thank you for the intricate glory of your creation and your great mercy in our salvation. May we worship you at this morning’s sunrise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
