In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
Nowhere in Mark’s account of the gospel of Jesus Christ is there a better example of the spare language of Mark. he got right to the point without fanfare or tedious backstory. Many theologians call the incarnation of God in human form the most important event that ever happened in history. An argument can be made for the Resurrection but “God with us” is undoubtedly epoch making. This is how Mark introduces Jesus Christ, God the Son, to the world. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Seriously? A skilled editor would have instructed Mark to sell this story and embellish it. None was needed. Jesus was here!
We can get so far into our walk that we forget how amazing it was that Jesus walked this earth and taught us. That is, unless we continually read the BIble that tells the story throughout. We do not need to embellish the amazing things he did for us, his agonizing death, his astounding resurrection, and his amazing grace. In fact, there is nothing to add to the Greatest Story Ever Told. Except this. Jesus will come again!
Dear Lord, thank you for your amazing gesture in coming to deliver us from sin. Help us to continually be in the word and in prayer of thanksgiving for what you did for us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
