But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
As a baseball fan, I automatically go to the team concept in situations like this. If every Phillie was a power hitter and poor fielder, the team would not function well. But on a dynasty team like the 1975 Reds, the totality of the strengths was their secret. That is a beautiful picture of the church, especially here. As I read these words, I put faces to the descriptions from faithful saints I have known who could not do everything, but could do something. Paul paints this picture and I wonder if he had a church in mind when he wrote these words. They all had problems, but, in a healthy church, like the human body, the body rushes to heal the wound.
I cannot overstate the importance it has been to me and Vicki to have members step up and help. It may seem to be a mundane task but Paul says that the small and weak parts are indispensable. Let us all be members of a body that worships together, suffers together, and rejoices together, so for the sake of all those suffering alone in the world, we can share the gospel of Jesus Christ so we can heal together.
Dear Lord, thank you for the privilege of being together in the body and being in covenant with you through Jesus Christ and the cross. Help us to bring the lost of the world together. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
