And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.
I teach Logic for the school that meets at the church and the goal is for their argument to have a firm foundation so the least objection does not knock it over. It is the same with Christian life. We need to have a firm foundation so the trials and objections to Jesus do not shipwreck us. These words end the Sermon on the Mount by Jesus and lay out the intent for the sermon. As R.T. France said, “The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not meant to be admired but to be obeyed.” also, as James said, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
The arguments against the existence of God and the resurrection of Jesus are very flimsy, surprisingly so, given the certainty of its opponents. The foundation is sand. The foundation for our argument is rock solid. The only way we can topple the argument for the existence of a loving God and a mighty Savior is to remain silent about it entirely. Today, may we be bold and confident like the man whose house is built on the rock. Because it is. No hurricane can match up with the God-breathed power of the gospel message. Send it today.
Dear Lord, thank you that we have a reasonable and solid faith to live by. Help us to not just hear it but live it and say it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
